"Ki no Jo"
There is a rhythm to all things in nature. When mind and body are one, we have a sense of openness and are able to move easily without excess effort. Our movements reflect a natural rhythm.
We call the proper feeling "taiga" and the opposite "shoga". "Taiga" is moving with a sense of harmony within yourself and with the world around you. Everything clicks. "Shoga", on the other hand, is characterized by separation, ego-based effort and "working hard".
Whether we are using a musical instrument, a paint brush, our automobile or a martial arts weapon such as a jo, the concept is the same. To master the use of any tool it must become a natural extension of ourselves and not feel like a foreign object.
